  13. Data Compression
  14. ----------------

  16. Data compression during backup typically doubles the useful capacity
  17. of any tape cartridge; those which formerly held 40 megabytes (QIC40) will
  18. now hold 80 megabytes, while those which held 150 megabytes (TD-101 with
  19. an extended length cartridge) may now hold 300 megabytes.
  20.  
  21. Backup performance typically improves, depending upon hard disk and
  22. CPU speed.  QIC40 and QIC80 users (those without a Mach2 card) in 
  23. particular will notice increased speed when using compression.
  24.  
  25. When 5.2.3-TD is first installed, the default is to write all volumes
  26. using data compression.  If a user should wish to disable compression,
  27. this can be done via the Utilities, Defaults screen in the lower right
  28. hand corner.  Most users will never have a reason to disable this feature.
  29.  
  30. The actual capacity of each tape can no longer be precisely determined
  31. prior to a backup operation.  This is because some files (e.g., data base or
  32. document files) compress very well, while others (e.g., previously ZIPped 
  33. or ARCd files) do not compress at all, and may even expand slightly.
  34.  
  35. Because of the inability to accurately predict tape capacity when
  36. writing compressed volumes, users will occasionally receive warnings
  37. from FileSafe that a given backup will not fit on a particular tape.  
  38. When this happens, the user is given the opportunity to format additional
  39. tracks, change tapes, abort the operation, or to simply proceed.  Often,
  40. the best choice when writing compressed is to simply proceed; the volume
  41. may in fact fit.

  60. NEW DEFAULT HARDWARE CONFIGURATION

  63. The Mach2 controller for non-microchannel systems is now being
  64. shipped with jumpers set for DMA channel 3 and interrupt channel 5.
  65. This setting is best for AT-class machines; XT-class systems will
  66. fail CHKTAPE, however, because these settings conflict with the
  67. hard disk controller.  If you are installing a Mach2 on an XT, be
  68. sure to change these jumpers first.  We recommend using DMA 1 and
  69. interrupt 3 on XTs; alternatively, DMA 2 and interrupt 6 may be
  70. set.

  100. Occasional Computer Lock-Ups
  101. ----------------------------

  103. In prior releases, the TAPE software would cause the computer system to
  104. lock-up and require a power-on reset.  This condition would occur during
  105. periods where the tape drive was not streaming, and the TAPE software was
  106. waiting for I/O buffers to be made available.  This has been corrected in 
  107. this software release.

  110. Mach2 Controller On PS/2
  111. ------------------------
  112.  
  113. On some PS/2 models, such as the Model 70 25MHz, use of the Mach2 controller 
  114. may occasionally cause the computer system to hang if the DMA mode is set 
  115. to burst mode.  If this problem is encountered on a PS/2, it is suggested 
  116. that the DMA mode be set (via the reference disk) to Single Transfer for 
  117. the Mach2 controller.

  121. KNOWN LIMITATIONS

  125. IBM PS/2 Model 70 25 MHz
  126. ------------------------
  127.  
  128. Installing the TD4000 or 8000 Plus tape drives on this computer
  129. requires using the Mach2 controller board. However, some problems 
  130. have been noticed when DMA channels higher than 6 are used for the tape
  131. drive. To avoid these problems, it is suggested that the Fairness mode
  132. be turned off (via the reference disk) for the IBM Fixed Disk Adapter 
  133. when using DMA channels higher than 6.

  136. Compaq Deskpro 286 (TM)
  137. -----------------------
  138.  
  139. The CHKTAPE program automatically configures the TAPE software to run
  140. with the installed hardware.  However, on this computer, the software will
  141. incorrectly set the "Controller type" to 5 when using a Mach2 controller 
  142. with a an internal 8000 Plus (Part Number 01-30525-01). This will record 
  143. QIC-80 format at slow speed.
  144.  
  145. By entering the Utilities Install screen, the "Controller type" can
  146. be manually set to the desired format. Refer to the on line help for more
  147. information on this option.
  148.  
  149. If you wish to run at high speed QIC-80 format, the tapes will require
  150. preformatting with the "Controller type" set to 5.  After formatting, return
  151. to the Utilities Install screen and change the "Controller type" to the
  152. desired format prior to performing a backup.

  154. With the internal 8000 Plus (Part Number 01-30526-01), you will be
  155. unable to use any "Controller type" besides 7. CHKTAPE will automatically 
  156. configure the software to run as type 7.

  159. Novell Users - Directory Naming
  160. -------------------------------
  161.  
  162. Novell allows creating directories which do not adhere to the DOS
  163. naming limit of 8.3 (as in ACCOUNTI.NG).  Novell allows you to create
  164. the same directory as ACCOUNTING which exceed 8 characters.  If
  165. such directory names are on the Novell partition when a backup is
  166. performed, an attempt to restore would result in a "Path not found"
  167. error for all data on the tape.

  169. To check for the existence of these directories, use the DOS TREE
  170. command and check for any messages indicating an invalid directory.

  173. Novell Users - Macintosh Interface
  174. ----------------------------------
  175.  
  176. Novell 2.15 operating system allows Macintosh users to store
  177. Macintosh files on the server.  This version of the software does
  178. not support Macintosh files and uncertain results will occur if
  179. Macintosh files and directories exist on the server when a backup
  180. or restore is done.

  183. Novell Users - Restoring Rights and Trustee Lists
  184. -------------------------------------------------

  186. Restoring data to a Novell system allows the option of restoring
  187. Novell security information in the form of Novell's Rights and Trustee
  188. Lists (R&TL).  If a complete backup is always done, a restore will
  189. always retrieve the R&TL if requested.
  190.  
  191.     Backups using "Backup of modified files by archive bit or since":
  192.  
  193.     If this type of "modified since" backup was used and to ensure all R&TL
  194.     are properly restored, you should start by restoring from the last
  195.     complete backup answering Yes to "Do you wish to restore the Rights
  196.     and Trustee Lists..." prompt, then restore the last modified since
  197.     backup, again answering Yes to the prompt for R&TL.

  202.     Start by restoring the last complete backup, then restore IN ORDER
  203.     all of the "modified since" backups.  In all restores, answer Yes to

  215. It is highly recommended that a verification pass be made after a backup
  216. or restore operation.  This will insure the integrity of the backup or
  217. restore, and can be used as a precaution against corrupted data.
